Description
Although many gods were worshipped in cosmopolitan areas of Alexander the Great’s empire, Athena reigned supreme. It was Athena who introduced the olive tree to mankind, and since olives were an important Athenian export, she was especially valued there. Athena was also the goddess of war, and the protector of men who were at war. But for her many attributes, she was best known in Athens for her exceptional wisdom.
This coin was struck by Balakros, who ruled Cilicia for Alexander the Great. Baal, is taken from Hebrew for ba’al, from the Phoenician ba’al,”owner,””lord”.
Among ancient semitic peoples, it was the name of innumerable local gods controlling fertility of the soil and of domestic animals, but unrelated to each other. Except for the offerings of fruits and the first born of cattle, little is known of the rites employed to worship baal. The term semite, or semitic, is a linguistic, not a racial or national, classification; it refers to peoples who spoke or speak any of the semitic languages.
