Mexico has not only a colorful ancient history, but modern times, also, have seen remarkable events. At the time this coin was struck the country was in the midst of the Porfiriato, or the government established by President Porfirio Diaz.
This period for Mexico was a time of change, both positive and negative. Diaz concentrated on improving the lives of the residents of cities, modernized the infrastructure, and shamefully neglected the workers of rural Mexico. And, although the social needs of the general population were ignored, Diaz was very close to the Catholic Church, and encourged its continued involvement in all aspects of Mexican life.
Not long after the minting of this coin, there would be cries of “Viva Zapata” throughout the land, but for now, the beautiful Eagle of Mexico, featured on this coin, soured the skies in peace.
