Maximinus
II; Peasant,
Soldier, Caesar
|
|
|
Born
Caius Valerius Galerius Maximinus, he was called Maximinus
Daia from his peasant birth. He was the nephew of Galerius,
and served in the army as a Scutarius, protector and tribunus.
As caesar under Galerius as Augustus, Maximinus spent the
majority of his time in the middle east, gaining some personal
success. He struggled valiantly to hold his empire against
Licinius, who had become Augustus of the west through a
series of circumstances that do not bear close inspection.

later took the name M. Aurelius Antoninus, and was known
for all of his life as Elagabalus, the name of the sun-god,
and the name he was given when he was made a priest in that
cult. The Julia's of the Roman Empire were powerful, fanatical

CONSTANTINE
THE GREAT
|
|
|
Flavius
Valerius Constantinus, better known as Constantine the Great,
was the first Roman Emperor to adopt Christianity. He was
born at Naissus (modern nis, Yugoslavia) about AD 280, the
son of Constantius Ii, who became a Caesar in the Tetrarchy
established by Diocletian. The nature of Constantine's conversion
to Christianity has long been a matter of dispute. Few emperors
of Rome are as fondly remembered as Constantine the Great.

Aurelian

Born
of humble parents at sirmiun about AD 207, Aurelian adopted
a military career, and by his skill, courage and bodily
strength he ultimately became one of the empire's greatest
generals, his reputation as a commander of cavalry being
particularly high. Some time after the death of Claudius
Gothicus, he was proclaimed emperor by his troops at Sirmium,
and after the suicide of Quintillus, he was left as undisputed
master of the empire. read
