The
Archers of Parthia
|
|
|
In
their conquest of the land and riches of the ancient cultures
of Asia the Romans encountered not only Greek kingdoms,
but also a powerful empire called Parthia which was ruled
by people native to modern Iran. This kingdom was destined
to survive for five hundred years, and their armies would
prove to be a thorn in the side of the Romans, with whom
they were in perpetual conflict. read

Parthia,
ancient empire of Asia, in what is now Iran and Afghanistan.
The Parthians were of Scythian descent, and adopted Median
dress and Aryan speech. They were excellent horsemen and
archers. In battle, mounted Parthians often discharged their
arrows back toward the enemy while pretending to flee; this
is the origin of the phrase "A Parthian Shot." read

Armenia,
The First
Christian Nation
|
|
|
Armenia
was so closely associated with the crusader states that
it can be properly considered with them. Christianity had
been the state religion since King Tiridates III was converted
by Gregory the Illuminator in 301 AD. At that time Tiridates
declared Christianity as the national religion, the first
country in the world to do so, some 20 years before Constantine
the Great did the same for the Roman Empire. As with many
Central European countries, Armenia has had a long history
of alternating periods of independence and subjugation.

The
Achaemenid Dynasty of Ancient Persia
|
|
|
The
Achaemenid Dynasty ruled Persia from about 550 BC to 330
BC. It was named for Achaemenes, a minor ruler of the Anshan
province, but the real founder of the dynasty was his great-great-grandson,
Cyrus the Great, creator of the Persian Empire. At the zenith
of their power, under Darius the Great, who ruled from 521
until 486 BC, the Achaemenids ruled an empire extending
from the Indus River in the east to Libya and Thrace in
the west and from the Persian Gulf in the south to the Caucasus
and the Jaxartes River in the north.
