to be used as a signature to authenticate business transactions.
They were made from clay, precious stones and limestone.
The symbols etched on the seal are the means by which origin
is determined. Those on this seal identify it as coming
from the Hittite civilization, about the middle of its prominence.
The Hittites were a civilization more ancient than Assyria,
Babylonia or Mesopotamia. In fact, it is now believed that
it once encompassed most of what became the Holy Land of
antiquity. read

Phoenicia...Ancient
Mariners Turned Merchants
|
|
|
The
homeland for Phoenicia was tiny, only 160 miles long and
20 miles wide, in the region now comprising Lebanon, and
parts of Syria and Israel. Little to support the population
could be done on that small parcel of land, so they took
to the sea. They became the most skillful shipbuilders and
navigators of their time, sailing to Spain, the Strait of
Gibralter, the British Isles, and Southern Africa. read

Scarab
- The Sacred Beetle
|
|
|
For
more than four thousand years, the mystical powers of the
scarab have been a source of fascination and attraction.
One of the oldest religious symbols in Egypt, the scarab
is an amulet, usually made of stone or faience, formed in
the likeness of the scarabaeus, a native Blue-Green Beetle.
That this rather common insect was chosen to be immortalized
in amulets is partly explained by its strange reproductive
and feeding habits. The beetle lays an egg, and in its underground
chamber carefully constructs a pear-shaped ball around it
with sheep dung. As the egg hatches, the young beetle seems
to emerge live from the sand.read
