The
Byzantine Empire
|
|
|
The
Byzantine Empire evolved from the Roman Empire's Eastern
Territories after the Roman Empire's western regions fell
in the 5th century. It comprised those areas of the empire
in Southeastern Europe, Southwestern Asia, and the northeast
corner of Africa, which included the present-day countries
of the Balkan Peninsula, and Syria, Jordan, Israel, Lebanon,
Cyprus, Egypt, and the eastern part of Libya. It lasted
for almost a thousand years. read

Constans
II,
Continuation of a Dynasty
|
|
|
Officially
named Constantine, his name was shortened early in his life,
and he was called Constans forever after. Constans II became
co-emperor at the age of 11, as the Byzantine Empire was
facing the aggressive Arabs. Egypt, the richest province
of the empire, was subjugated by the Arabs in 642, and the
invaders had a navy that was strong enough to challenge
Byzantine supremecy on the seas. read

Constantine
the Great, the first Christian Roman Emperor, refounded
the city of Byzantium and named it after himself, as Constantinople,
in 330 AD. This area became known as the Byzantine Empire.
Constantine established precedents for harmony of church
and state that endured as long as the empire. The empire
slowly formed a union of late Roman customs, Orthodox Christianity,
