Athena Gold Stater
Alexander "The Great" was a young ambitious king who dreamed of conquering the world. After bringing Greece under his yoke, Alexander traveled to the Oracle to determine if his next conquest, that over the vast Persian Empire, would be successful. Unfortunately, the Oracle was closed that day; but that did not stop Alexander: He burst into the Oracle's palace demanding his prophecy! She delivered it, "My son, you cannot be stopped." This Oracle was famous for delivering ambiguous answers, but Alexander's came true. This gold stater is a tribute to the most powerful Goddesses in the Greek Pantheon with regard to battle: Athena and Nike. Athena, the Goddess of Wisdom and War Strategy, is featured wearing her Corinthian war helmet, and she is backed by Nike, the personification of victory. Nike holds a wreath of victory, and the inscription states: "Of Alexander."
